Ubud is known as the cultural heart of Bali. Although it has become more touristy and busy over the years, it always finds a way to be soothingly peaceful. A traffic jam turns into a Balinese ceremony walking through the streets. Turn down a side lane and suddenly you&#8217;re in a beautiful rice field. When I think of <a href=\"https:\/\/almostlanding-bali.com\/ubud\/\">Ubud<\/a>, the first things that come to mind are monkeys, spas, yoga studios and incredible food. And although the days can get quite busy, the mornings and evenings can be much calmer, which is why we always recommend staying in Ubud rather than doing a day trip. There is also another option, which is staying in the nearby neighbourhoods (just outside the centre).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the map above, you can see the main area of Ubud Village, with the main streets being Monkey Forest Road, Jalan Hanoman and Jalan Raya Ubud. So what part of Ubud is best to stay in?<\/p>\n<h3>Option 1: Staying In Ubud Village<\/h3>\n<h4>Overview<\/h4>\n<p>Busy with tranquil pockets if you know where to look, and plenty of things to do within walking distance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Type of traveller:<\/strong> Perfect for first-time visits to Ubud, solo travellers, couples, families, digital nomads, budget stays; there is something for everyone unless you want a secluded stay. It&#8217;s also the best option for those wishing to do a lot and are not confident renting a scooter.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nearby attractions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Monkey Forest<\/li>\n<li>Ubud Palace<\/li>\n<li>Ubud Market<\/li>\n<li>Campuhan Ridge Walk<\/li>\n<li>Restaurants: PICA, Ibu Susu, Clear Cafe, Milk &amp; Madu, Warung Ibu Oka<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Transport options:<\/strong> Most things within Ubud town centre are walkable. To go outside of the village you can hire a private driver or use Grab\/Gojek.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pros:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Walkable to restaurants, attractions, rice field walks<\/li>\n<li>Less time in traffic<\/li>\n<li>Great base to fit in a lot of activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Cons:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Can be very busy, but if you choose your accommodation and activities mindfully you can still have a somewhat tranquil stay and experience the natural beauty of Ubud.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Should You Stay In The Centre of Ubud?<\/h4>\n<p>There are lots of pros to staying in the village, the main one being that most things will be within walking distance.<\/p>\n<p>If it&#8217;s your first time visiting Ubud, it will make it easier to explore the streets, eat at the restaurants, attend yoga classes, go shopping and visit different spas. You will also have easy access to <a href=\"https:\/\/almostlanding-bali.com\/ubud-monkey-forest-bali\/\">Ubud Monkey Forest<\/a>, Ubud Market, Ubud Palace and other attractions. Staying in the centre is also ideal for solo travel.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, staying in central Ubud will be more touristy and much busier than if you stay outside of town.<\/p>\n<p>Having said that, we have been pleasantly surprised by how quiet and peaceful some of the places we have stayed in the centre of Ubud have been, from small family-run hotels to luxury resorts. We have included our favourite places to stay in Ubud Village in our accommodation guide below<\/p>\n<p>If you choose to stay in the centre, you can still make the most of Ubud&#8217;s natural beauty. You can access <a href=\"https:\/\/almostlanding-bali.com\/walks-in-ubud\/\">rice field walks<\/a> from the village within a short walk, visit waterfalls like <a href=\"https:\/\/almostlanding-bali.com\/tegenungan-waterfall-bali\/\">Tegenungan<\/a> or hire a <a href=\"https:\/\/almostlanding-bali.com\/discover-a-different-side-to-bali-with-your-bali-private-driver\/\">private driver<\/a> for day trips to nearby areas.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>What Part Of Ubud Village Is Best To Stay In?<\/h4>\n<p>The main streets of the village are Monkey Forest Road, Jalan Hanoman, Jalan Raya Ubud, Jalan Dewisita and Jalan Gootama.<\/p>\n<p>Jalan Raya Pengosekan is also central, but the farther south you go, the further you are from the heart of Ubud.<\/p>\n<p>Jalan Suweta and Jalan Sri Wedari are also very central, but long roads, so the further north you go, you get further away from the town centre.<\/p>\n<p>Jalan Bisma is very central but also a little quieter and more removed from the main streets, so a great area. There are, of course, some smaller streets around these areas also.<\/p>\n<p>Staying in Ubud village is a great pick for people without a scooter, first-time visitors, and people who prefer to be within walking distance of the main sights and food.<\/p>\n<h3>Option 2: Staying In Nearby Villages<\/h3>\n<p>Two of the main nearby villages are Penestanan Village and Nyuh Kuning Village.<\/p>\n<h4>Overview<\/h4>\n<p>Quieter villages with local charm that are slightly removed from Ubud town but not as convenient.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Type of traveller:<\/strong> Digital nomads, longer stays, people wanting to be close to the centre of Ubud but a little removed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nearby attractions:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Campuhan Ridge Walk (walkable from Penestanan)<\/li>\n<li>Monkey Forest Sanctuary (reachable from Nyuh Kuning)<\/li>\n<li>Yoga studios<\/li>\n<li>Restaurants: Moksa Ubud (Penestanan), Alchemy Bali (Penestanan), Yellow Flower Cafe (Penestanan), Sage (Nyuh Kuning)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Transport options:<\/strong> Some parts of these areas are walkable to Ubud town (albeit not a short walk), but realistically you will need some form of transport like a scooter, taxi or shuttle. For activities further away you can also hire a private driver for a half day or day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pros:<\/strong> &nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Local village feel<\/li>\n<li>Quieter than Ubud town<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Cons:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>May still need a scooter or transport to get to Ubud town depending on where you stay<\/li>\n<li>May still need to sit in traffic to get to certain attractions and restaurants<\/li>\n<li>Not as many restaurants and attractions in the immediate vicinity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Nyuh Kuning Village<\/h4>\n<p>Nyuh Kuning village is located behind Ubud Monkey Forest. It&#8217;s a beautiful area but the street connecting it to the main town is for walking and scooters only.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on what area you stay in, it will be about 10 &#8211; 20 minutes walk to reach Monkey Forest Road. If you need to take car transport, it will still take 10 &#8211; 20 minutes (maybe longer pending traffic) to reach the main area as you need to go the long way around.<\/p>\n<p>So although it can still be a great option if this suits you, it&#8217;s worth noting as it looks closer on a map than perhaps it is in practice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Penestanan Village<\/h4>\n<p>Penestanan village is an area just outside the main area of Ubud village.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a popular place to stay for digital nomads and those seeking an authentic village atmosphere, yet still close to the main area.<\/p>\n<p>Although you can still technically walk to the centre from here, it&#8217;s probably a better choice to stay in this area if you have a scooter.<\/p>\n<h3>Option 3: Staying On The Outskirts Of Ubud<\/h3>\n<h4>Overview<\/h4>\n<p>Stay amongst green jungles and rice paddies, here is where you&#8217;ll find natural beauty and tranquillity, although you may be quite far from Ubud Town. Some of the best luxury hotels in Ubud are located on the outskirts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Type of traveller:<\/strong> Perfect for couples, family, honeymoon, and those looking for unique places to stay, tranquillity and natural beauty.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nearby attractions:<\/strong> It depends on what area you specifically stay, however, you will need to drive to most activities, attractions and restaurants. Ubud luxury resorts usually have an excellent range of activities in the local area or further that you can access from the resort. We&#8217;ve had some of our favourite experiences staying at luxury resorts in Ubud, from riding bikes through the surrounding villages and greenery, and rice field walks and chatting with people from the local community.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Transport options:<\/strong> Luxury hotels usually have a free shuttle bus into Ubud town multiple times per day, or you can hire a scooter or private driver.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pros:<\/strong> &nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Natural beauty &#8211; located within or near jungle or rice fields<\/li>\n<li>Tranquil<\/li>\n<li>Many uniquely designed luxury resorts with elements of Balinese culture and traditions&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Luxury hotels can have incredible facilities and activities within the surrounding local areas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Cons:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Some areas are quite far from Ubud town if you plan on spending time here<\/li>\n<li>Need to use transport to get around<\/li>\n<li>Limited access to restaurants outside of the hotel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Should You Stay On The Outskirts?<\/h4>\n<p>A lot of Ubud accommodation is located on the outskirts, some are not too far away from the village, while others may be as much as 30 &#8211; 50 minutes away. Some of the main areas are Sayan, Payangan, Tegalalang &amp; Kedewatan.<\/p>\n<p>These hotels are often surrounded by beautiful jungles, lush greenery or rice paddies and offer experiences to explore the surrounding nature and community.<\/p>\n<p>So for us, the thing we love about staying on the outskirts of Ubud is definitely the natural beauty and tranquillity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t ride a scooter, we would recommend staying at luxury resorts rather than budget hotels outside of Ubud. You will be quite isolated, so with a luxury hotel you will have plenty of facilities, including a shuttle service to take you into the centre.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, as you are located further away, you may not have the same time to explore Ubud centre, which is something to consider when deciding.<\/p>\n<p>But suppose you&#8217;re staying in a beautiful hotel with restaurants, a pool, a spa and other experiences. In that case, you will also spend your time relaxing and enjoying the local area surrounding the hotel.<\/p>\n<p>If you choose to stay in the outskirts, we would definitely recommend that you choose accommodation with a good restaurant, as you will most likely be having some meals there.<\/p>\n<h3>Which Option Is Right For You?<\/h3>\n<p>There&#8217;s no right or wrong option, just different. We&#8217;ve stayed in both the village and different areas around Ubud and have absolutely loved all the experiences.<\/p>\n<p>You could also combine the two, and spend a couple of nights in Ubud Village, and a couple of nights in the outskirts to relax, enjoy nature and see another side of Bali. This would be a great option for a first time visit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"days\">How Many Days Do You Need In Ubud?<\/h2>\n<p>Wondering how many days in Ubud is enough? We would recommend at least 3 &#8211; 4 nights, but you could also definitely stay longer.<\/p>\n<p>3 to 4 nights is ideal as it would allow you enough time to explore the centre and experience a few things to do in Ubud and the surroundings. <a href=\"https:\/\/almostlanding-bali.com\/walks-in-ubud\/\">Walk through the beautiful rice fields<\/a> or the beautiful <a href=\"https:\/\/almostlanding-bali.com\/how-to-get-to-the-campuhan-ridge-walk-ubud\/\">Campuhan Ridge<\/a>, visit Sacred <a href=\"https:\/\/almostlanding-bali.com\/ubud-monkey-forest-bali\/\">Monkey Forest Sanctuary<\/a>, go <a href=\"https:\/\/almostlanding-bali.com\/tegenungan-waterfall-bali\/\">swimming in a waterfall<\/a>, so many options.<\/p>\n<p>But there&#8217;s a lot more you can do in this area and it can also be a great base for some interesting day trips. Its location is also in the sweet spot of being in the outskirts whilst still being close to the centre (10-minute shuttle). Here you can choose to stay in a suite or a pool villa.
